New Books for Syllabus

Please add Josef Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale to the syllabus to replace Silence and Never Let Me Go. You should be able to pick both of these up at just about any bookstore in town. There are also tons of secondhand copies available, so get whatever edition you can find. We'll discuss when to read these as we get closer to time. The novels don't really figure into the syllabus until near Thanksgiving.

The Persians are coming!

Hi everyone:

Thanks for a GREAT first day's discussion today. I'm really looking forward to diving into the material with you.

The play that I couldn't quite name is Lysistrada, written by Aristophanes in 411 BC. It's quite funny, and holds up quite well. If I remember correctly the GSU Players performed it a few years back.

If you're in the mood for something Greek, Theatre in the Square in Marietta is producing Aeschylus's The Persians. You can often snag half price tickets from the AtlanTix booth at Underground.

NEW Poll .... check it out!

Hello everyone:

I'm thinking of making a couple of changes to the syllabus, replacing Never Let Me Go with The Handmaid's Tale, and Silence with Heart of Darkness. These two might fit better with our theme. Please vote in the poll, and we'll see how things line up. The poll will close next Friday.

Most of you probably read Heart of Darkness in High School, but I have a new "take" on it that I'd like to try out.

The poll is anonymous, so be honest :)

Have a good weekend. I'll be emailing pdf files for the next readings (Ovid and Hesiod)

Nietzsche

I think Mr.Whitaker should grow a mustache like Friedrich's. Somebody really should if he doesn't. Extra credit maybe?
